ICO: CASTLE IN THE MIST - MIYUKI MIYABE

The boy was smiling.

Toto understood instantly. He wasn’t hiding from whatever it was everyone else had been looking at—he was playing hide-and-seek. Whatever happened to the people in this city had happened so quickly, he hadn’t even had time to realize that he was about to die.

Reluctantly, Toto admitted what he had known for some time already. This city was no grand work of sculpture. This was the reason why the mountains in the north were forbidden. This was the curse of the Castle in the Mist.

The master in the castle was capable of dooming an entire walled city in the space of a breath.

This was what Ico had seen. This was what he meant by “trouble”, why he was so determined to sacrifice himself for the village.

GOOD LUCK YUKIKAZE — KAMBAYASHI

“Lieutenant Fukai, you are fighting a useless battle. Do you hear me?”

“This is B-1, I read you loud and clear. Please state your name, rank, and unit attachment.”

“Response confirmed. I lack the type of classification and identification codes which you have asked about. Lieutenant Fukai, please respond if you accept or deny my request.”

“If you’re going to make a request of someone, it’s only common courtesy to make your social position clear to them,” Rei replied, knowing that wasn’t true at all. “Who are you?”

After a short, almost embarrassed silence, it responded.

“By your conceptualization, I am the whole of what you refer to as the JAM.”

“The whole…You mean you’re the JAM themselves? Should I think of you as a voice representing the JAM?”

“I would not object to that judgment. Please issue your response.”

Rei switched off the comm circuit for a moment and called out to Lieutenant Katsuragi.

“Lieutenant, what do you think of what it said? Do you think I can believe this to be a representative of the JAM?”

“Hell if I know. I will say that it sounds unnatural, though. Like somebody is ordering it to say that stuff to you.”

“I agree. Maintain observation of our surroundings.”

“Roger.”

MIRROR SWORD AND SHADOW PRINCE - NORIKO OGIWARA

Stay with me. You need not fret. Surely you know that there has never been a time when I did not think of you.

Toko gripped Oguna harder. She could feel that he was struggling to remain detached.

Let the girl go. The voice suddenly sounded harsh.

“No.”

She’ll be the ruin of you. She’s detestable.

Which one of us is really detestable, Toko thought. Despite her terror, she felt anger swelling inside her.

Kill her.

ROCKET GIRLS: THE LAST PLANET - HOUSUKE NOJIRI

Compared to these two, I’m like one of those walking stuffed animals at Disneyland, Norman thought.

The two other astronauts looked frighteningly small and thin to the American. Their waists were barely bigger around than one of his arms in the spacesuit. And what’s more, while he looked like the Michelin man, they were shapely. You didn’t expect to see curves like that in the payload bay of a space shuttle flying at 300 kilometers above the surface of the Earth.

Their golden reflective visors were up, so she could see their faces—like dolls, he thought.

“The valve assembly is inside there. See the gap on the engine side in the center of the ring?”

“So it’s in there, just behind the helium tank, right?” Akane asked.

“That’s right. How’d you know?”

“I’m a quick study.”

“All right, well, be careful. Every single tank in there is dangerous.”

“I’m aware of that.”

“Shall we get started, Akane?” Yukari asked. “Let’s go in and check things out first. Take it easy. It’s more tangled in there then it was in the CG simulation.”

“Right.”

Akane was getting used to extravehicular activity by now. In the skintight spacesuit she wore, it was hardly any more difficult than scuba diving. But Yukari was right. Compared to the training video they had seen, the real engine structure had all kinds of small protrusions here and there. This wouldn’t be easy.
